I am a Registered Architect, who grew up spending his time on construction sites with my father, a registered builder and a nuclear engineer, where I gained practical knowledge and developed the desire to work with my hands, understand materials, construction technology, and project economics. Most importantly it seems, I learned a lot about the strength of having a pragmatic design, and how it can influence project dynamics, construction programs, and outcomes.
I am also an avid skier, fisherman, enthusiastic carpenter’s apprentice and hands-on residential builder. I am passionate about teaching, emerging construction technologies, and the protection and conservation of our natural world.
Through my unique experience working on large scale sports precincts, tall buildings and complex commercial-scale projects, my personal and industry focus became centred on the use of emerging parametric technologies, construction systems and design technology to achieve a better built, designed, and more socially and environmentally responsible built environment.
I have a very progressive and conceptual approach towards architecture and the built environment, which I developed through my work and passion for BIM + Parametric workflows, and unique experience and knowledge in the design and structural rationalisation of large sports stadia and tall buildings with geometrically complex designs that focused on structural efficiency and buildability.
I have a very curious mind, and I am always collaborating and looking to learn from my peers, university mentors, and share my knowledge with industry colleagues, friends and students through my teaching engagements at the University of Melbourne.
In 2017 I founded Petroff Architecture, which is a Melbourne based practice, specialising in design technology and residential architecture. The practice’s approach towards architecture and design is one that tries to demonstrate my commitment to creating spaces that are inspired by nature, craft and design innovation. This philosophy has been influenced by my enthusiasm for clear, considered and conscious design thinking that enables us to create spaces that have an enduring design simplicity. I always try to have an emphasis on passive design strategies, well detailed and built structures, which consequently do not cause any further unnecessary harm to the environment around us.
